Travel Astrology - Basics

Important astrological houses for travel and anything related with foreign element are 9th and 12th house, but also 3rd house for short trips. The most important house for travel is definitely the 9th house. So let us take a closer look at the 9th house.


The 9th house is ruled by Sagittarius, whose ruler is Jupiter. Sagittarius is fire, adventure, daring, impulsive, open minded, loves to party and exploring new horizons, both through travel and philosophy. Jupiter is the great benefic, which means that whatever it touches brings expansion and growth without much effort. Unless there is a difficult aspect, Jupiter brings luck and wealth. So besides the 9th house we should also check the placement of Jupiter, which is the main significator for travel.

The main indications for travel, moving to foreign land, marrying a foreigner or work involving a foreign element are:

1. 9th house - sign, planets in it and their aspects, aspects to cusp, placement of the ruler
2. Jupiter - placement, aspects
3. 12th house - sign, planets in it and their aspects, aspects to cusp, placement of the ruler

The main difference between 9th and 12th house when it comes to travel is the nature of it. The 9th house brings travel and consequently wealth and good reputation in foreign land, whereas the 12th house brings travel and some kind of loss regarding it, generally financial loss. The 9th house is more related to travel where the 12th house is more related to foreign settlement or living abroad for longer period. This is often the case when there is a connection between the ascendant and/or Jupiter with 9th or/and 12th house. When considering if the settlement will be permanent, we should check any connection with the 4th house, if there is one, the person will most likely return back to the place of birth/home. This may not be the case if the ascendant and/or the rulers of the 9th and 12th house are in fixed sign where the native is likely to move to foreign land permanently.

The native can for sure expect travels or connections with a foreign element if the 9th and 12th houses are occupied, especially with Jupiter or Sun, but even if these houses are empty it does not mean the native will not travel, because we have to consider other aspects as well.
